They Say Things Come in Three's

That is enough for me. I am done. My third thing has happened. Let me take you back a bit.

In April of 2010, I had neck surgery. It was a good thing and a long time coming. It needed to be done. The only downfall was I was out of commission for a couple of months. That is frustrating to me. I am not a person who likes to sit still. While recovering from neck surgery, sitting still was necessary. This was number one.

If you have read my blogs from way back, you will recall one I wrote about tearing my calf muscle (Chasing Shopping Carts). This happened about six months after my neck surgery. Once again, I was down. I couldn’t get around very easily, I was on crutches and I was frustrated. That was number two.

Well, number three happened at the second day of volleyball practice. I guess I had forgotten that my calf muscle wasn’t quite the same. I had forgotten I am not 18 anymore and am not in the shape I used to be in. In my mind, I am still in that young body. I still have the knowhow and volleyball skill, so I participate in drills. Turns out that wasn’t such a good idea. I planted my foot to turn, my shoe stuck and my knee moved side to side in a fashion it was not meant to. It popped twice, buckled and I was on the floor.

Well, great! I stood up, the knee folded. When I tried to walk, it buckled to the inside. Turns out I have damaged my MCL. I am once again not very mobile. I have a brace on, I can barely walk and I am frustrated. With the MCL injury, usually no surgery is done. It is a matter of reducing swelling, gaining mobility and building strength…a long process. So here we go again…

The thing that is hard is that I have been in the process of trying to get in shape because I know I hurt myself because I am out of shape. What a circle! I have been biking, exercising, walking….now I am icing and elevating. The good thing is I will get to a point where biking will be good therapy.

My advice to everyone…don’t let yourself get out of shape, if you already are…start doing something about it. See Sheila’s links on my web page, http://www.blueskies4you.com. Remember, what you are capable of and pace yourself! Don’t be like me and think you are 25 years younger than you are. So I have had injury one, two and three…I hope I am done for a while!

P.S.  I will not pot for a day or two.  See you next week!  Have a great weekend.

Val the hardest thing for me is getting up off the couch! I walk way more than I should on Saturday then don't want to the rest of the week, so what I'm saying is that I totally get this post!

Vote #6! I've also heard that trouble and death comes in 3's. However, I have definitely had more troubles than that these past 3 years! LOL!

They need to have a clinic for people like you and me. A place where the terminally clutsy can go on a regular basis. Hope it heals soon and quit hurting yourself. Okay, that's what my husband always says to me. It hasn't worked yet, but where there is a wish, there might be a way....:) voted!

Triple Bummer!!! Why is it we can feel so young and energetic inside but the outside protests?? My 80 year old dad is always saying how he feels like a teenager still, inside, but the ole outside body has other ideas! Take care of yourself~~ :-)

Ouch Val, I am praying for a quick and speedy recovery, and health and healing. You will be fine girl, you are that young girl inside. I know what ya mean about staying in shape. I too know that circle. I have been adding to my endurance daily with my walks/jogs/runs. I love it! The whole key is consistency! I must stay consistent and persistent! I will have to check out Shelia's links! voted!

Voted Friday, I think. The humility and honesty in your posts is always refreshing, Val; it provides a more balanced perspective than mine, typically. I am 5-10, 157 pounds, and I got to that point by jogging, walking, and watching what I eat during the week. I hope I can maintain that level, because heart disease, obesity, heart attacks and diabetes await me if I get careless! Good point on trying to maintain health. Even a simple 40-minute walk at our own pace can make us feel better and healthier.

So sorry to hear of this injury Val. Oh my but I can relate, unfortunately. I have torn cartilage, ripped muscles and pulled tendons because I can't seem to convince myself I am not in my 40's, and gettin' up there fast. :-( Rest and I'll pray for a super duper quick recovery. Just can't keep a good woman down now........ :-) Voted-

Sorry to hear about your injury Val. Take your time with it and let it heal. I've had three sprains of the ac joint in my shoulder from football. If I had let it heal the first time I'd be alright. I took my time with my Achilles when I tore it and haven't had much trouble with it since. Take your time so you can get back into it. There are ways to stay in shape while rehabbing.

Val, I am so so sorry to hear about that. I had an injury that took so long to heal and I ran into the same circle that you talk about. You get out of shape, hurt yourself, get back into shape and so on. Anyway, I hope you start feeling better. Sending good thoughts your way.
